I was really happy to see your article. I am a retired psychologist. The reason therapy works is because microcosms can be extrapolated.into macrocosms. If Warren will make this advantageous claim, she will make others. The claim to minority status which Warren did with the Texas Bar, U of Penn and Harvard was advantageous and indicative of her willingness to use others or make claims when she believes are beneficial. Only June of this year, Warren claimed to be for Medicare for All backer when previously she supported private insurance. She described herself as a “Markets” person and Bernie as a “Socialist”, but she assumes Bernie’s programs which are Democratic Socialist ideas. I believe she desires to share his momentum, but is she a Capitalist in disguise? So, who is Warren? There are many Caucasians like myself who admire the beliefs of Native Americans and believe that the planet would be better off with Indigenous leaders., but I would never claim to be Indigenous, even though I’d like to. I am watching Warren. I do not trust her.

Great perspective and informative as to how Warren’s actions affect Native Americans. The European community must come clean about Warren’s shortcomings here and colonial mindsets and action in general. Racism and colonialism are too damaging to be swept under the rug. They are very real, mortally harmful and fully embedded in the dominant, European, white supremacist society.

“Ancestry is not race, genetics are not culture and you cannot self-identify as Native” .

This sentence contains many factual errors. For many “races” geneticists can make correct assertions about ancestry. For example, if someone is “black” as judged by anthropologists today in America, it is 100% certain at least one ancestor in the family tree lived on the African continent.(see Dr. Henry Louis Gates) It may very well have been more than 600 years ago that a single ancestor (or more) lived on the African continent, but it is 100% certain. Now, if someone “claims” self identity as black, like Stan on Southpark that is a different matter.

It is 100% true that if Detlef Schrempf and Lebron James gave DNA samples to 23andme one would be identified as having European ancestors and one as having African ancestors. This is genetics = race = ancestry! It is also 100% certain that if someone has Ashkenazi DNA at a high percentage someone in their family tree probably circumcized a male child at some point. It may have been 1,000 years ago but it did happen. That is religion/culture=DNA.

So in some cases (I am not saying all) DNA is ancestry is culture! What a specific group wants to call it is up to them. However, if Elizabeth Warren said her family told her there was Amerind lineage DNA somewhere in her ancestry that would be 100% correct. Ask the Wellesley Biological Sciences Department.
